The committee which is responsible for the asbestos related issues; ‘All-Party Parliamentary Group on Occupational Safety and Health ‘ was rather shocked to find out after a research that 75% of the UK schools have lethal asbestos dust fibres present in the school buildings. Because of this, the children and staff are exposed to the fibres on a daily basis.
Around 140 teachers have died in the past 10 years in UK because of mesothelioma caused because of the prolonged asbestos exposure. This is not only an alarming number; but is an indication of the growing figure that might continue growing if no action is taken towards it.
The Member of Parliament are calling upon the Government to get the parents educated about the health hazards the children face on a daily basis; and also to get started with the clearing of the deadly asbestos material. The MPs are also advising on beginning the asbestos removal across every school in the UK.
The Labor MP for Praisley, Jim Sheridan calls it a ‘national scandal’ with over 70% of school still functioning with the deadly asbestos remains lying around. He also suggested on having to take the urgent action in order to save young lives and to prevent endangering the lives of staff.
